She was a princess but declared illegimate through political machinations. She eventually claimed the throne at the age of 25 and held it for 44 years, keeping England in the ascendant through wars, and political and religious turmoil.
She was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, who was beheaded when Elizabeth was two years old. And she was declared illegitimate because her father wanted a male heir. Elizabeth received a very good education, that of a royal child.
She was away from court until her brother, Edward, died in 1553, her sister Mary and Elizabeth came back to first line but it was after Mary's death when Elizabeth was proclaimed Queen of England in 1558.
She inherited a country full of problems: They were in war against France and the religious tensions were all around the country. She established again the so-called Church of England and the Pope Pious VI excommunicated her in 1570 and she ended the war with France.
Meanwhile she had to face internal problems: Her cousin Mary Stuart wanted to remove her from the throne and be the Queen of England. Elizabeth kept Mary imprisoned for nearly 20 years until she finally agreed to have her executed in 1587.
She seemed to have no interest in getting married, and because of this she was nicknamed The Virgin Queen.
Elizabeth loved music, dancing and watching plays; during her time the arts flourished with the creation of works by William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. Artists also honored her by painting royal portraits. These images reveal that she loved colourful garments and jewellery.
